How else would you know that your collection needs weeding and/or shifting? There is no better way to get to know your collection than by getting in there and getting your hands on the books. I think this is one of the reasons I love weeding so much.Rebeccahttp://www.shelfrenewal.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-522319810296642659.post-8838297436596004752010-03-11T10:05:01.845-06:002010-03-11T10:05:01.845-06:00I whole heartedly agree. I started my library car...I whole heartedly agree. I started my library career as a page in high school and college. No one in the library knows the collection better than the pages do. Now as a new library director I don't do much shelving. But I do like to make time to walk through the stacks to get a feel for what's been sitting there forever and needs to be weeded and do a general straightening and chat with the patrons.Melaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04706415853410863622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-522319810296642659.post-90618552236676970612010-03-10T14:25:08.308-06:002010-03-10T14:25:08.308-06:00Hee hee, I thought only I cleaned the books (secre...Hee hee, I thought only I cleaned the books (secretly!)

I feel exactly the same way. I also find that going out and planting myself in a section (most recently the 970s) is a great way to do collection management and weeding. Once you see everything you have, you can pick off the weak ones (worn, damaged, embarrassingly out of date...).

I also send a voluminous pile for re-labelling. Like with items that are mis-shelved, if you can't read the label, then what's the point?Alexandrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13267343586937882369noreply@blogger.com
