Nobel Prize in Literature is an American Poet!

Early this morning, the Nobel Prize in
Literature for 2020 was announced and not only is the winner an American woman, but she is former poet laureate of the United States.

From the official announcement with a link to the full press release:

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2020

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2020 is awarded to the American poet Louise Glück “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal”.

Louise Glück made her debut in 1968 with Firstborn, and was soon acclaimed as one of the most prominent poets in American contemporary literature.

More about Louise Glück and her works

Press release

There will be more interest than normal in this winner from our patrons since the winner is American. But here is the good news, you have her books on your shelves. Precisely because she was a poet laureate, you will have titles by her in your collections.

Here is an example from my consortia catalog of the books by and about Louise Glück

Get a digital list out on your websites. Tweet out a link to your catalog records. Put it on Facebook. Grab the titles and cluster them with the announcement.

But also, use this as a chance to highlight other Poet Laureates, especially those named to the post this century. Here is the Library of Congress site for this post.

Poetry has seen an uptick in popularity recently, but also especially during the quarantine. I wrote about this at length in this post from August 2020 entitled, "Can't Focus on a Noel? Try Poetry." I think a poet is an excellent choice for 2020.

But this is also a great chance to celebrate all of our Poet Laureates. You could display your Louise Glück books and all of the books you have by Poet Laureates to fill out the display and anticipate your patrons' needs in so many ways.
