Back from vacation and the next couple of days are about catching up on all of the reviews and lists by me that posted while I was in Europe (more on that soon too).
Tomorrow will be a list from The Lineup, and then my annual assessment of last year's resolutions, followed by my statement of this year's.
But first, today, here is my January 2023 Horror Review Column in Library Journal with my three words and links to my full draft reviews on Goodreads.
The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro (utterly terrifying, generational trauma, engrossing)
Gothic by Philip Fracassi (cursed object, immersive, palpable terror)
The Shoemaker’s Magician by Cynthia Pelayo (gripping, love letter to Horror, haunting)
Link my interview with Pelayo from this issue
- Melinda West: Monster Gunslinger by K.C. Grifant (fast paced, strong world building, imaginative)
- PiƱata by Leopoldo Gout (vengeance is mine, horrors of colonialism, immersive dread)
- The Destroyer of Worlds: A Return to Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff (Reclaiming Lovecraft, intricately plotted, though provoking)
- Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy Snyder (body horror, Cosmic, strong world building)
- This one just missed getting a star; I limit myself to 3 per column of 8 books
- Mothered by Zoje Stage (claustrophobic, escalating dread, almost unbearable tension)
