Monday Discussion: Best Book You Read This Year Part 1

It is time to start talking best books here on RA for All.  But first a word of warning.  I do it a bit differently than other websites.  I will have 2 different categories: best book you read this year that was NOT published in 2012 and best book you read that WAS published in 2012.

Those will run for the next 2 Monday Discussions.  Then later in the month, I will have my list of the best books I read in 2012 no matter their publication date.  And over on the Browser's Corner, the entire RA Dream Team will be posting their favorite reads in the second half of December. Our fearless leader, Kathy will be running those consecutively, giving each staff member a day to post their favorites.  I will alert you when that begins.

But today it's the best book you read in 2012 that was NOT published in 2012.

For me it was an easy choice.  11/22/63 by Stephen King, with a 2011 publication date, fits this bill.  Click here to read my review.

A close second was Ready Player One by Ernest Cline also with a 2011 release date.

Interestingly, I listened to both of these novels.  I wonder if that increased my enjoyment of them?

So for today's Monday Discussion, I am asking you to share with me your favorite book you read in 2012 that was NOT published in 2012.  Save those 2012 releases for next week.

Coming in a close second was "All the King's Men" by Robert Penn Warren, pub. 1947. http://www.scrambledbooks.com/2012/09/all-kings-men-by-robert-penn-warren.html But for its overwhelming impact on all subsequent novels my #1 book I read this year was "Don Quixote" by Cervantes, pub. 1605. http://www.scrambledbooks.com/2012/06/don-quixote-de-la-mancha-review.html

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvator. This also happens to be my favorite audiobook of all time.

This was a hard one to choose but I am going with "Eat the Document" by Dana Spiotta. It was published in 2006 and was great!

There are so many, but my latest favorite is Rites of Passage by William Golding, published in 1980.

Best Remembered Poems edited and annotated by Martin Gardner. It is a poetry compilation I came across in the library poetry section. It has some amazing work.

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell (published in 2004) just blew me away. I've never seen such an unusual structure, it really keeps you guessing!

I totally agree with you about the reader of the audio version. Mr. Wasson embodied Jake's voice, and all of the other characters, perfectly! I'm not a Stephen King reader, but I loved this audiobook. I hated for it to end, too!

I think I'm also going to say Ready, Player, One by Ernest Cline. I think it was the most exciting, thrilling and fun book I read all year.

I liked "Winter of the World" by Ken Follett.

"The Blade Itself" (2007) by Joe Abercrombie--a very cool, dark fantasy that could appeal to the fans or R.R. Martin. Still, "Ready, Player, One" could be close second.
