Using Awards Lists as a RA Tool: The Staunch Book Prize Edition

This is part of my ongoing series on using Awards Lists as a RA tool. Click here for all posts in the series in reverse chronological order. Click here for the first post which outlines the details how to use awards lists as a RA tool.

"The Award For A Thriller In Which No Woman Is Beaten, Stalked, Sexually Exploited, Raped Or Murdered."

This is a welcome list for RA purposes and one of the best examples of why awards lists are more than a prize, they are one of our best tools to help readers. [Use the links in the first paragraph to access more details]

I know we have all gotten this request at dozens of times-- I want a good crime story where women are not victimized. It is not an easy question to answer unfortunately; women are often violated, maimed, or militated in most thrillers. But thanks to the Staunch Book Prize we have 6 titles from this year that we can count on for their lack of violence against women and their critical acclaim. And, this is the 3rd year for the award, meaning we have 18 titles! This will keep readers busy for a while.

And once we figure out which of these 18 titles our readers like most, we can work our resources to find them more options. Until the establishment of this prize, we were missing the starting point to help readers looking for these books. And that is why awards lists are such a great tool. They are an excellent starting point-- they have made an award short list, so we know these titles are a solid starting point.

Click here or below for the 2020 short list, here for 2019, and here for 2018.  Make a display [in building and digital], keep the lists handy for future queries, and of course, make sure you have all of these titles in your collections. And check the link in the opening paragraph for the longer explanation on how these lists can work best for you.
