I am going for a bit of whimsy today on the Monday Discussion. With the huge debut of the new Superman movie over the weekend and my work on the ARRT graphic novel genre study I have superheroes on the brain.
Now as I have said before, I am not a huge superhero fan, but I still have some favorites.
At home, we taught our kids about the Wonder Twins from the old Super Friends cartoons back when my husband and I were kids. We have them pretending to change their form, ala Wonder Twins style, all the time now.
In terms of more current superheroes, I am partial to the Dark Knight Batman. Currently my kids are huge Avengers fans and Teen Titans.

my all time favorite "hero" is the Spectre. He exacts cold hard vengeance on the wicked, he is dark and gritty. Superheroes don't usually exact their own justice on villains.
While I enjoyed super hero stories as a child, I lost interest later in life. If I had to pick one, I'd choose the now nearly forgotten but highly influential "Shadow". Wealthy bachelor by day, crime fighter by night, he was the inspiration for Batman. He had the ability of mind control which he learned in Asia. In literature, he survives now only in reprints of depression-era pulps.
My childhood favorite was probably Batman, but these days I'm much more fond of Wonderella.

I never really read graphic novels, but growing up, my favorite super hero was always Batman because he was just a normal guy who happened to have lots of money to make cool gadgets. I think they did a good job with portraying that in Nolan's Dark Knight series.
