I have some content in the August issue of Library Journal, which is not a normal month of Becky content in the magazine.
First, as part of their work to fix past mistakes and get classic works of genre fiction officially reviewed, I have a STARRED review of The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson here.
Yes it is a travesty that it was not reviewed when it came out. But first, it is genre fiction. And for far too long, the mainstream literary world ignored genre. Second, it was by a woman. And 2a, it was a story by a woman meant to make readers very uncomfortable (and thus seen by many at its time to be unladylike).
Look, you can complain all you want that the book was not reviewed when it was, but the action is in LJ acknowledging the harm of pervious editors and tying to fix it. They have lists of books and are getting through them as fast as they can.
Side note: This by the way is true anti-racist work. Complaining about the failing of others is NOT. I talk about this at length in my anti-racist RA training program with Robin. How we all need to acknowledge past harm and do better.
Back to today.
Since I am a paid columnist for Library Journal, they decided they would not run a review of Why I Love Horror, and instead, I did an interview with my reviews editor, Melissa DeWild. It went live today here.
