Using Awards Lists As a RA Tool: Hugo Awards Edition

This is part of my ongoing series on using Awards Lists as a RA tool. Click here for all posts in the series in reverse chronological order. Click here for the first post which outlines the details how to use awards lists as a RA tool.

The Hugo Award finalists have been announced. You can see the finalists here. And bonus, Tor.com has this post with a way to start reading every single nominee. This is a very nice addition to the announcement.

For those who do not know, the Hugos are voted on by those who have signed up to attend WorldCon for works of fantasy and science fiction. As opposed to the Nebulas which are voted on by the members of the SF and Fantasy Writers, the Hugos include votes from both writers and fans.

As usual, you can use the links in the first paragraph above to see what I have to say about how great awards lists are and how you can use them to help patrons and keep yourself in genre shape.

The Hugos, in particular are a great resources because they have categories for the regular things you would expect AND categories that are very specific to SF and Fantasy like "Best Series," "Best Fanzine," "Best Editor," and more. Click through to see all of the nominees and pay special attention to the emerging writer category.

And please do not forget to use the backlist to find many more great reads. There is a year by year archive available at this link.

Why not make an OverDrive Collection of current and past nominees for your patrons to browse? Or repost the Tor.com list of the nominees and how to start reading them. Consider making a list of the TV shows and movies that received nominations and where people can view them. The possibilities are endless.

There is a lot you can do to help spread the word about these great speculative stories. Remember to always look at awards lists as your best RA Tool.
