Anti-racist Reader Services: Beyond the Basics
April 3, 2024
10:15 AM-11:15 AMETYou're committed to providing anti-racist service to your community, and you've learned basics, like where to find diverse titles and how to audit your collection. So, what's next? This session will discuss deeper concerns and questions about actively anti-racist reader services, like how to deal with racist comments from patrons, whether every viewpoint deserves a spot on the shelves, and how to create your vision of anti-racist collections and services.Presented byRobin Bradford, Pierce County Library SystemYaika Sabat, NoveListBecky Spratford, RA for All
This program is going to be very focused on the "next level" of Antiracist Service to Leisure Readers, with half of it focused on 3 big concepts and then we will move into the most popular questions, concerns, and/or issues that come up every time we offer this training through NoveList. And, we are going to have multiple ways you can ask your questions as we are leaving at least 15 minutes [hopefully 20] for live questions. We will have notecards in the back with someone collecting them for us, if you don't want to ask at the microphone as well as taking questions live.
I am going to be very clear here. If your question is a comment, I will cut you off. We have limited time and want to help those who have questions.
Comments can come after, or as I mentioned yesterday, Robin and I are also appearing at the EBSCO/NoveList booth [2123] on Thursday from 12-1 to answer your questions in a more private setting. This is also where we can handle comments, but especially, we want that booth time for those who are not comfortable having their questions taken during the program time. We are doing as much as possible to create a safe space to discuss these sensitive topics. The information about that booth time is also in the slides, as is our contact info. You can always email us as well.
Since I am presenting as part of the work I do with NoveList, I also wanted to take this moment to remind you that they are celebrating their 30th Anniversary. Please click here to see their latest newsletter.
