My June 2025 Horror Review Column is now live on the LJ site and in the current issue of the print magazine! In this post I have gathered the titles with my three words and links to my full draft reviews on Goodreads. Click through for readalikes and more appeal information.
First this month's STARS:
- The End of the World As We Know It: New Tales of Stephen King’s The Stand edited by Christopher Golden and Brian Keene (expands the world of a classic, diverse (in every way) TOC, immersive)
- Edited interview with the editors in this issue with the uncut version here
- The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (oppressively uneasy, witchcraft (both as plot and real history/folklore), intricately plotted (but easy to follow))
- A Game in Yellow by Hailey Piper (discomfort, an original retelling of a classic work, cursed book)
And the other 5 excellent titles:
- How to Survive a Horror Story by Mallory Arnold (meta, cozy horror, multiple point of view)
- Blood Slaves by Markus Redmond (detailed world building, vampires, revenge horror)
- a good readalike for Sinners fans
- Fiend by Alma Katsu (Ancient Evil, Multiple Points of View, Thriller-Horror Hybrid)
- Negative Images by Rebecca Schier-Akamelu (Terrifying, SF-Horror Blend, Thought-Provoking)
- The Library at Hellebore by Cassandra Khaw (Dark Academia meets Visceral Body Horror, conversational style, race against time)
